  • Eight free events in Brevard will let families enjoy local festivals, music and crafts from June 27 through July 3. The activities include a mango festival on June 28 at Sams House Nature Center, a youth band concert in Melbourne on June 27 at 7 p.m., museum open houses, an amateur radio field day, an art market, a scavenger hunt, a tapestry workshop and a garage sale—check with organizers for any changes.  Florida Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utility work began on June 25 at 7 a.m. along Weslaco Street SE near Quentin Avenue on the Florida Power & Light easement in Palm Bay as Cypress Gulf works on the Emerald Lake development. The lane closure will continue until July 2 at 5 p.m.—motorists should follow posted detour signs and use caution.  Space Coast Daily
  • Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 1620 and Senate Bill 168 on June 25 to improve mental health and substance abuse treatment in Brevard County, and the Florida Mental Health Institute at USF will be renamed —Senator Darryl E. Rouson Center for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Research— to honor his service. This legislation standardizes clinical assessments, supports crisis planning, and creates diversion programs to help residents get needed care.  Space Coast Daily
  • Brevard County Fire Rescue is hosting Lightning Safety Awareness Week—urging residents to seek shelter when thunder is heard since lightning can strike from up to 10 miles away. Officials advise checking weather forecasts and avoiding open areas during storms to stay safe.  Space Coast Daily
