  • Firefighters contained a brush fire that burned 15 acres south of Micco Road—ignited by lightning during a Monday thunderstorm—and evacuated 8 to 10 homes to keep residents safe.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • A 16-year-old driver lost control of her 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan at 3:40 a.m. on State Road 520 near Cressa Circle, flipping several times and striking a guardrail before being pronounced dead while her 15-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries—officials reopened the westbound lanes just after 7 a.m. as investigators probe high speed and the absence of a seat belt.  Space Coast Daily

CRIME NEWS

  • Titusville Police arrested two suspects on August 20 at 4:20 p.m.—one, James Saunders, was booked for solicitation and sale of a controlled substance while the other, Calease Jordan, was charged with trafficking fentanyl after an undercover investigation led to the seizure of 8.6 grams, with bonds set at $25,500 and $150,000.  Space Coast Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, five Brevard County high schools ranked among the top 110 in Florida with West Shore Jr./Sr. High and Edgewood Jr./Sr. High placing in the national top 100 (the rankings are based on test scores, college readiness and graduation rates). U.S. News and World Report released the annual report to highlight the schools’ performance.  Florida Today
  • Brevard Public Schools will launch its new Electricity Program with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Heritage High School in Palm Bay on August 27 from 9 to 10:15 a.m. The program will offer hands-on training for electrical careers—providing industry-recognized certifications and potential work-based opportunities.  Space Coast Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On August 21, SpaceX launched the Boeing-built X-37B space plane from Kennedy Space Center on a Falcon 9 rocket — the unmanned vehicle will test a new GPS sensor and laser communications experiments in orbit. A SpaceX Cargo Dragon mission to the ISS will lift off on August 24 no earlier than 2:45 a.m.  Florida Today
