  • A 19-year-old college football player visiting home for Mother's Day was shot to death early May 11 near the Neon Rodeo bar in downtown Melbourne—police said a 24-year-old Palm Bay man was charged with manslaughter and claims self-defense after a verbal altercation.  Florida Today
  • Melbourne police asked for help from the public in identifying two suspects involved in a January robbery on Sarno Road—one, a 6 ft tall Black man known as Tony wearing a white baseball cap and light clothing, and the other, a 5 ft 7 in Black man wearing a maroon hooded sweatshirt and black beanie, who attacked a local business victim and stole jewelry, electronics and cash.  Space Coast Daily
  • Melbourne city leaders are meeting today to discuss the deadly shooting that occurred early Sunday morning downtown—where 19-year-old defensive lineman Nathaniel Bernard Jennings lost his life while on summer break in Palm Bay.  FOX 35 Orlando

  • Florida House Bill 1105 passed to let high school marching band students earn one credit in physical education or performing arts by completing two years of band participation—if signed by Gov Ron DeSantis, the law will take effect July 1 and also limits student cell phone use in younger grades.  Florida Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Hurricane Center will begin issuing daily tropical outlooks on May 15—highlighting areas for possible tropical development over the next seven days—to help local residents prepare for hurricane season, which starts on June 1.  Florida Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Recent rains dropped Brevard County's average Drought Index below 450 on May 12 and lifted the ban on open burning and fireworks. County officials — including Fire Rescue and Emergency Management — urge residents to check weather forecasts and maintain a defensible space as wildfire risks remain.  Space Coast Daily

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • New data shows Brevard County apartments for rent were listed at an average of $1,434 in April—up 0.28% from March's $1,430 rate. One-bedroom units rose to $1,199 while two-bedroom listings stayed nearly flat, and overall prices remain 7% below state averages.  Florida Today
