  • Freed slaves founded the first non-Native settlement in Cocoa Beach after the Civil War, seeking opportunity on a remote barrier island; a hurricane in 1885 discouraged growth until investors and attorney Gus Edwards later began developing the land.  Space Coast Daily

  • The Caribbean Princess returned to Port Canaveral on May 11 after a nearly two-week voyage when over 100 passengers and crew experienced norovirus symptoms — federal health officials said crew members isolated sick individuals and increased cleaning measures before its next departure.  Florida Today

  • PuroClean of Melbourne released the list of nominees for the Boys Athlete of the Week for May 4-10 - a nod to local athletic talent in the community.  Florida Today
