- ➤ A Rockledge roofing contractor and a Merritt Island man face federal prison time for smuggling over 90 migrants from the Bahamas after authorities stopped their vessel at Sebastian Inlet—on May 1, 2025 a federal judge sentenced the contractor to 30 months in prison, ordered him to forfeit $284,000 and two boats, and the Merritt Island man, who pleaded guilty, awaits sentencing. - ➤ Brevard County teacher Karly Anderson was found guilty of disorderly intoxication and resisting an officer without violence after attending an underage house party in January—she was sentenced to probation, community service, and fines. FOX 35 Orlando
- ➤ Former teacher Karly Anderson was found guilty of misdemeanor disorderly intoxication and obstructing a police officer following a trial that ended May 6 — after an alcohol fueled party on Jan. 19 — and she will undergo random drug and alcohol testing throughout her probation. Florida Today

- ➤ Eastern Florida State College's Public Safety Institute is accepting online applications for its Emergency Medical Technician and Paramedic programs with a deadline of June 8 and intake by invitation scheduled for June 17. Classes start on August 18—EMT students earn an Applied Technology Diploma by the end of the Fall Term while Paramedic students work toward a State of Florida certificate and Associate degree. Ron DeSantis said on May 6 that the House’s plan to cut property taxes was ineffective, dismissing the 37-member committee formed by House Speaker Perez that is meant to study tax reduction ideas. Perez said the group will review five proposals and return with a plan for future tax relief—while lawmakers are set to resume budget talks on May 12. Florida Today
