  • Mold K9 Detection Services uses certified dog Arizona (trained under Bill Whitstine) to detect hidden mold behind walls and under flooring in our area without invasive demolition. The family-run business will certify a second dog, Phoenix, soon to serve more customers on the Space Coast and Central Florida.  Space Coast Daily
  • Spirit Airlines permanently closed 14 facilities, including five in Florida, leaving 4,853 employees laid off as of today. The shutdown came after rising fuel prices and global events forced the company to quickly cease operations (seeking needed capital was no longer possible).  Florida Today

  • Olivia Rodrigo will drop her new album You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love on June 12 and perform four Florida tour dates in November at the Kia Center in Orlando and Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise; presale tickets begin today and general sale starts Thursday.  Florida Today

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On April 1, NASA's Artemis II launch drew 90,000+ out-of-county visitors to north-central Brevard County, boosting local spending to over $41 million. Officials reported each visitor stayed two days and spent about $462 during their visit.  Florida Today

  • Eastern Florida State instructors Ed Mango and Wade Dauberman used their firsthand experience from the April 1 Artemis II launch to bring real-world aerospace lessons to EFSC students, drawing on past NASA work to spark interest in careers at Kennedy Space Center, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin (as reported).  Space Coast Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists at the University of Miami found that brown seaweed on local beaches comes from West Africa + not the Sargasso Sea, and the study could help forecast blooms that affect coastal tourism and fisheries, with another record bloom expected by summer.  Florida Today
  • Satellite Beach officials are set to vote on making the pilot dog beach program permanent as pet owners urge more coastal freedom while conservation advocates warn the move could harm rare sea turtles — the community weighs recreation and wildlife protection.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • Today is the third day of Hurricane Preparedness Week, which teaches Palm Bay residents to understand forecast cones from the National Hurricane Center.   • Palm Bay residents are encouraged to prepare now for hurricane season starting June 1 by stocking supplies, planning evacuation routes and reviewing insurance, as flood insurance has a 30-day wait.
