CULTURE NEWS

  • Florida Today photographer Craig Bailey captured SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy bursting through clouds near Kennedy Space Center at 5:04 a.m. today. His photo shows the shockwave cutting through the clouds after the April 29 launch.  Florida Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill on May 1 to require students in grades three through five to learn cursive writing to boost literacy and hand-eye coordination. The new law will soon guide local classrooms statewide.  Florida Today
  • Rockledge High School Resource Officer Chris Hattaway was named Florida School‑Related Employee of the Year by the Florida Department of Education on May 1 — the state's highest honor for school employees. He earned recognition for his steadfast mentorship and commitment to student safety on campus.  Space Coast Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane season will begin June 1, with the peak on Sept. 10 and most tropical storms expected between August and October. Local residents can use the countdown clock and real-time radar (from the National Weather Service) to stay informed.  Florida Today
  • Crews are rebuilding the shoreline in a beach renourishment project, and early research points to changes in surf flow that could affect rip currents. Project sponsors say *other factors* also play a role.  FOX 35 Orlando

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A courtroom battle over lifesaving beach rings is ongoing after two drownings in Cocoa Beach as the Rotary Club and Drown Zero dispute the devices' ownership — further hearings will decide the equipment's future.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • Social Security payments follow the normal May schedule. Checks go out on May 13 for birthdays from the first to 10th, May 20 for birthdays from the 11th to 20th, and May 27 for birthdays from the 21st, while those who began before May 1997 are paid on the third.  Florida Today
  • NASA works with U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to conduct prescribed burns in 2,600 acres of scrub habitat at Kennedy Space Center while keeping the rocket launch countdown on track today. The burns aim to protect the Florida scrub-jay habitat and signal a new shift in managing land and launch operations.  Florida Today

  • Merritt Island baseball defeated reigning state champion American Heritage 3-2 in Game 1 of the regional semifinals today, launching their playoff push. The win marks a hard-fought start for the team at their home field.  Florida Today
