ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews in Palm Bay reached 100% containment for nine brush fires at The Compound just before 11 p.m. on April 28 (the cause is under investigation).  FOX 35 Orlando

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Port Canaveral has been selected to receive a $20.21 million federal grant to upgrade its North Cargo Berths 1 and 2 that serve tanker vessels for Central Florida’s transportation system. The design phase is underway and construction will begin early 2027 to extend berth life by up to 30 years.  Space Coast Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brevard County schools offer hands-on STEM programs including Boeing’s Destination Moon challenge in aviation, engineering, and skilled trades while honoring students at enlistment ceremonies for military service, connecting classroom learning to local aerospace and career opportunities.  Florida Today
  • Yesterday, the Brevard County School Board met at district offices in Viera where board members and educators shared public comments. Photos document the event and show discussions on district plans.  Florida Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After being released last year, orphaned Florida black bear cub Rickie returned to Brevard Zoo when officials found the cub was too friendly with people and was receiving human food; it now lives permanently at the zoo with residents Brody+ Betty+ Cheyenne.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • Florida drivers are seeing lovebugs on their cars and along roads as the seasonal swarms appear this spring — experts advise driving before 10 a.m. or at night to avoid the insects, which do not bite or cause damage if removed within 24 hours.  Florida Today

  • At the Brevard school board meeting yesterday, several speakers addressing issues like student expulsions and spending policies were interrupted by board chair Matt Susin and board member Katye Campbell — comments were moved to a non-agenda portion of the meeting.  Florida Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health First Partners led a biannual trauma drill today at Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville with first responders + EMTs simulating a school bus accident and multi-casualty incident. The exercise aimed to boost communication and critical decision-making during emergencies.  Space Coast Daily
