  • A Palm Bay police officer sustained minor injuries at 1:17 p.m. when his patrol vehicle caught fire while responding to a homeless encampment between Onyx Drive NE and nearby railroad tracks — the fire briefly spread to adjacent brush with no structural damage — and an investigation into its cause is underway.  Space Coast Daily

  • SpaceX will launch its Falcon 9 with Starlink satellites from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station tonight at 9:32 p.m.—the booster will aim for a drone ship landing about eight minutes after liftoff as the 45th Weather Squadron reported over a 95% chance of favorable weather.  Florida Today

  • A Florida postal worker in Melbourne was arrested on April 12 after she allegedly drank two shots of vodka while on her mail route, drove the wrong way in traffic, & threw red Solo cups from her truck, endangering vehicles and children nearby.  FOX 35 Orlando

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Brevard Public School Board voted 4-1 not to renew teacher Melissa Calhoun’s contract at Satellite High School after she used a student’s chosen name without parental consent — a move that aligns with state law protecting parental rights.  Space Coast Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Palm Bay will see a celestial smiley face when Venus, Saturn, and the thin waning crescent moon line up above the eastern horizon about 30 minutes before sunrise on Friday, April 25 — a rare event lighting the early morning sky.  FOX 35 Orlando

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Palm Bay Police Department hosted its annual memorial service (held at Sacrifice Park behind City Hall near the DeGroodt library) to honor fallen Officers Gerald Johnson and Ronald Grogan (killed by mass shooter William Cruse on April 23 in 1987). The service also recognized 17 law enforcement members lost in the line of duty in Brevard County.  Florida Today
  • On April 22, Brevard County commissioners approved changes to tourism grant rules so groups can use cultural event funds from hotel taxes for more than marketing purposes. The new rules now include smaller groups and let each commissioner award up to $20,000 to support local cultural programs.  Florida Today

  • Health First announced that it is speeding up work on two new freestanding emergency departments in Brevard County. One facility will be built at 3300 S. Fiske Blvd in Rockledge — zoning and permitting are underway while details for a second ED in southern Brevard are still being finalized.  Hometown News
