  • SpaceX will launch a Starlink mission from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral on Thursday, April 24 at 9:32 p.m. EDT — adding to its satellite network. Amazon will launch a ULA Atlas V rocket carrying its Project Kuiper satellites from Launch Complex 41 on Monday, April 28 with a two-hour window starting at 7 p.m.  Florida Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Brevard school board voted 4-1 not to renew Satellite High School teacher Melissa Calhoun's contract after she used a student's preferred name without parental consent—supporters protested vocally and caused two recesses during Tuesday night’s meeting.  FOX 35 Orlando

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Palm Bay Fire-Rescue said a large vegetation fire that burned a 30-40 foot pile of vegetation on April 21 is contained but still smoldering near St. Johns Heritage Parkway and Babcock Street. Fire crews will continue to monitor the area as the debris burns off over the next several days.  Florida Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a county commission meeting on April 22, officials voted to study a fire assessment that could raise homeowners’ taxes by up to 37%—a move aimed at funding 90 vacant firefighter positions and wage increases. The final vote will be held on May 20—officials say public input will help decide the final rate.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • Due to ongoing dry weather and a high wildfire risk, Brevard County has put in place an open burning ban that covers bonfires, campfires, trash burning and other incineration—this automatic ban does not apply to state-permitted burns, barbecue grills or authorized public fireworks displays.  Space Coast Daily

  • Two Health First hospitals were named to Newsweek’s Best Hospitals lists for 2025. Viera Hospital earned a spot among America’s best state hospitals and Cape Canaveral Hospital received its fifth consecutive honor on the World’s Best Hospitals list — awards that show their strong focus on quality care and patient safety.  Hometown News
  • Orlando Health agreed to give $10 million over seven years to local health providers to help cover extra costs after Rockledge Hospital closed on April 22; five local groups shared an initial $3.05 million grant to meet urgent needs.
