  • The Brevard Veterans Coalition will host its Veterans Stand Down event on May 3 at the Joe Lee Smith Center in Cocoa from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., where veterans, their families, and homeless veterans will receive free resources including mental health support, housing aid, legal help, and financial assistance + free breakfast and coffee from local sponsors. The event marks the coalition’s 3rd anniversary and reinforces its commitment to those who served.  Space Coast Daily

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On April 21, SpaceX launched its Bandwagon-3 rideshare mission and its Falcon 9 booster landed at Cape Canaveral—creating the second sonic boom of the day. The next SpaceX launch, Starlink 6-74, will take off from Cape Canaveral at 9:32 p.m. on April 24.  Florida Today

  • A lion photobombed the wedding ceremony of Tara and Tommy Beers at Brevard Zoo in January and photos released in April by Nick and Lauren Photography show the unexpected moment—an intrusion that made the day even more memorable.  Florida Today
  • Pope Francis died on Easter Monday at 7:35 a.m. after delivering his final Easter message at the Vatican. Brevard County Catholics, including Tony Cortes (82) from Melbourne, honored his call for unity and care for the poor while some church members (such as former priest Frank Pavone) questioned the future direction of the church.  Florida Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brevard Public Schools now allows all K-11 students to join summer enrichment camps after initially limiting attendance to public school students. Registration will open on May 5th at 6 p.m. and camps run from June 2nd to June 26th (the update is detailed on the district website).  Florida Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers with Waterway Warriors have removed 321 tires from an island off Cocoa Beach to stop toxins that harmed mangroves at the Indian River Lagoon in Brevard County. They will remove the remaining 200 to 300 tires in mid May & then start restoring the island.  FOX 35 Orlando

HEALTH NEWS

  • Orlando Health shuttered Rockledge Regional Hospital today because its condition is deteriorating and repair costs are too high—it served Brevard for 84 years. The facility will be demolished and its land sold as Orlando Health plans to build a new hospital and reassign affected employees.  Space Coast Daily
