COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Merritt Island will host the Merritt Park Place Sip & Stroll on Friday, Apr. 24 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event (held at McLeod St, Tangerine Ave, and N Grove St) will let residents explore the revitalized district, enjoy refreshments, and support local businesses.  Space Coast Daily
  • Approximately 250 future service members took the Oath of Enlistment on Friday evening at Viera High School Stadium with support from 250 JROTC cadets from 14 high schools — a demonstration of our community’s strong military tradition — as Col.   • Space Coast Symphony Orchestra will hold its Season Announcement Party Sunday, May 3 at Riverside Presbyterian Church in CocoaBeach — the free event will feature conductor Aaron Collins with soprano Tesia Kwarteng and pianist Jacob Craig in a follow-up recital.  Space Coast Daily

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA reported that Florida’s average for a gallon of regular gas dropped to $3.990 on April 20 (just under the $4 mark) while the national average remained above $4, and Monroe County recorded the highest price at $4.275.  Florida Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A dispute over a teacher using a student's chosen name remains unresolved at Satellite High — following a parent's complaint in March 2025 — as one teacher, despite local clearance, now faces potential license suspension. The case stems from a 2023 state rule requiring parental consent for name deviations.  Florida Today
  • Rockledge High School students from the HELM program toured Port Canaveral recently, where port leaders detailed maritime career paths and provided a behind-the-scenes look on the Explorer of the Seas (a key industry vessel).  Space Coast Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Lyrids meteor shower will peak tonight after 10 p.m., with viewers expecting 10 to 20 meteors per hour as the comet's debris lights up the sky. Stargazers should seek dark areas away from city lights for the best view.  Florida Today
  • The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning across 31 counties with burn bans in place while a fire weather watch covers areas from Daytona Beach south to Bonita Springs. Residents in these counties are advised to follow local fire restrictions to cut wildfire risks.  Florida Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At 2:53 a.m. today, a SpaceX rocket launched the final Lockheed Martin-built GPS III satellite from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral – the satellite carries upgraded anti-jamming and navigation technology including an optical crosslink payload and digital atomic clock.  Florida Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • Brevard County high school sports results from Monday, Apr. 20 show Merritt Island Christian won 17 to 4 over Holy Trinity while Melbourne defeated Oviedo 6 to 1, Viera beat Melbourne Central Catholic 3 to 1, and Space Coast edged East River 5 to 3. Key players were Keri Shea, Layna Ayala, Shea Young and Kodibeth Bates.  Florida Today
  • Eastern Florida State College’s softball team moved up to No. 11 in the latest NJCAA Division I poll released Monday. The Titans, now 34-12, travel to Daytona State College today for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. & seek to build on a 4-0 win streak in conference play.  Space Coast Daily
