CRIME NEWS

  • On March 28, a Florida man aged 41 taunted state troopers and drove at high speeds on Interstate 95 before crashing his Mercedes into a tow truck—killing three and seriously injuring another, and he was later indicted on 17 charges including first degree felony murder.  FOX 35 Orlando
  • The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office today launched the Drunk Olympics campaign to warn drivers that drinking and driving puts lives at risk — Sheriff Wayne Ivey said impaired drivers may face severe penalties. The campaign advises residents to use designated drivers or ride-sharing services to help keep roads safe.  Space Coast Daily

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Space Coast Economic Development Commission released an economic impact report showing that the future Bowen Aquarium + Conservation Center at Port Canaveral is projected to generate over $128 million in annual area sales, more than $43 million in local labor income, and support over 1,000 jobs. The report, prepared with the East Coast Zoological Foundation, highlights the project’s role in boosting tourism and local economic growth.  Space Coast Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez and Gov. Ron DeSantis are at odds over a state budget that shows a $4.4 billion gap and different tax cut plans which could leave the session unfinished by May 2. Perez said the House will work overtime or hold a special session if needed—adding tension to debates over law enforcement spending and political funding.  Florida Today
  • On April 17, the Palm Bay City Council discussed future plans for The Compound as part of a meeting that reviewed the Compound Redevelopment Action Plan by Vita Nuova and noted vacancies on the Community Development Advisory Board.
