  • Darcia Jones Francey, a beloved community volunteer, died on April 1 at 73, leaving a legacy of local service. A celebration of her life is set for 11 a.m. Thursday, April 23 at Ascension Catholic Church and donations may be made to Friends of Sally’s House or Health First Foundation.  Florida Today

CRIME NEWS

  • Residents in Merritt Island reported two roaming dogs have killed up to 20 cats over several years; on Sunday, Apr. 16 the dogs broke into a neighbor’s porch and killed a cat—prompting homeowners to install cameras to capture further attacks.  FOX 35 Orlando

CULTURE NEWS

  • Author Lolisa Marie Monroe released her children’s book, Where Beau the Beach Bunny Burrows, drawing on local acts of kindness such as rescuing sea turtles and a community’s support during emergencies.   • Crude oil futures fell slightly today thanks to the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, but Florida gas prices stay above $4 per gallon as experts warn that price drops may be short-lived + lasting supply issues could push prices even higher by Memorial Day.  Florida Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local officials faced increasing complaints over illegal dumping after trash piles grew in several neighborhoods. Councilmember Mike Hammer toured problem areas on April 16 — urging residents to report dumping and stating that stricter measures will be discussed at an upcoming City Council meeting.  FOX 35 Orlando

  • Eastern Florida State College softball set a school record with 26 runs in a 26-0 win against Hillsborough Community College on Thursday in a Citrus Conference doubleheader; the Titans are 20-10 & will face Daytona State College for a doubleheader Tuesday at 1 p.m.  Space Coast Daily
