  • A 45 year old man from Merritt Island—Edward Cocaine—was arrested on Wednesday after he allegedly threatened two Subway employees with a knife during an incident on April 5 at a local restaurant; security footage shows the employees trying to stop him from coming behind the counter.  Space Coast Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students gathered after school at Satellite high on Thursday to protest that Melissa Calhoun's contract was not renewed, showing their support for the teacher.  Florida Today
  • Students protested outside Satellite High Thursday as they rallied against the decision to not renew teacher Melissa Calhoun's contract after she used a student's preferred name without parental consent; her contract will expire in May and district officials said the decision follows a state rule—protesters argue that this move stifles students' ability to express their identity.  Florida Today
  • Florida high school teacher Melissa Calhoun is set to lose her job for calling a Satellite High School student by a name other than the legal one without written parental consent as required by state law — she admitted knowingly failing to comply and her 10-month contract will not be renewed pending a review of her teaching certificate.  FOX 35 Orlando

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An 835-acre prescribed burn was conducted west of Interstate 95 and south of Micco Road near the Brevard and Indian River counties border on April 10, 2025, according to local officials. The controlled burn was planned to reduce wildfire risks — residents were advised to keep windows closed and limit outdoor activities.  Space Coast Daily
