  • Health First Fight Child Hunger 5K runs on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 8 a.m. at Viera High School to support The Children’s Hunger Project and the Sharing Center of Central Brevard; participants pay $25 (or $15 for youth) and earn a finisher prize with a pancake breakfast after the race.  Florida Today

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Max Space is setting up a manufacturing facility in Exploration Park at Kennedy Space Center to build expandable habitats using Kevlar based materials & plans to hire 30 to 50 staff by mid-year as it prepares a demo mission for Falcon 9 in 2027 and Thunderbird Station for 2029.  Florida Today
  • Lucky Goat Coffee will open its first Brevard County cafe on Jan. 8 in Viera at 2105 Viera Blvd, near the Home Depot, where it will offer handcrafted lattes, nitro cold brew and seasonal menus.  Florida Today

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tomorrow, at 1 p.m., Brevard's school board will meet with Cape Canaveral's council at the Educational Service Facility to discuss the potential closure of Cape View Elementary — following the council's resolution urging the board to keep the school open.  Florida Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In 2025, 628 manatees died statewide with young sea cows hit hardest, and a federal judge mandated a pause on new septic tanks near Indian River Lagoon (a winter feeding plan is required). Brevard Zoo also opened its new $2.1 million manatee rehab center to help care for the animals.  Florida Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • West Melbourne Police warned that riding electric dirt bikes on public roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks is illegal under Florida law, and parents are urged to keep these off-road vehicles on private property + designated trails to avoid fines and vehicle impoundment.  Space Coast Daily

SPORTS NEWS

  • Brevard County high school sports will run from today through Saturday with girls and boys soccer and basketball games set at local venues such as Palm Bay, Cocoa and Merritt Island — match times range from mid-afternoon to early evening.  Florida Today
